“My mate is a sparkey and he does our testing for us”

PAT NZ:
“Does he???”
“Is that something your business should leave up to a mate? Or is it an aspect of your businesses health and safety that your business should take ownership of?”

“Are your test tags up to date?”
Go and have a look!

National Safety Show

At the National Safety Show this year I attended the worksafe seminar.

Something that really stood out was what was noted as the things inspectors look for when inspecting a businesses health and safety. Of all the things they look for – at the top of the list was HOUSEKEEPING.

Such a simple thing but good housekeeping projects a positive image for your business.

I have Laughed about it a few times but the cleanliness of your toilet really does reflect the systems your business has in place.

From the Energy Safety NZ website

“Vigilance on testing and tagging proves its worth

The testing of appliances in the workplace proved to be worthwhile for one company in New Plymouth.

Having purchased two items of equipment for their operation from a dealer, the company electrician tested the items prior to putting them into service. It was discovered that one of the appliances had a manufacturing fault — the earthing conductor was not connected to the frame of the appliance. This meant that the appliance would have become live and the protective device would not have functioned in the event of an earth fault.

The potential for an electric shock was very real. “It shows that vigilance in this area pays off” said a company spokesperson.

The message is clear — proper testing of workplace electrical appliances can save lives.”

We have found this at PAT NZ too along with all the other failed items we find. The average fail rate for all PAT NZ customers is 7% and all these items have the potential to cause an electric shock.

Back to work

Many Kiwi businesses have had a nice long summer break this year. Returning from a long break often means a long list of jobs to catch up on, don’t let employee safety slip to the bottom of the list. Phone us, book a date for your appliance electrical safety testing and cross that job off the list!

Authorities on Workplace Health and Safety

There are big changes in store for New Zealand’s workplace Health and Safety. Don’t get swamped, let PAT NZ take care of your appliance safety. Rest easy in the knowledge that your company has it sorted.

We had the Department of Labour, now we have the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Soon we will have the new stand alone authority Worksafe New Zealand.

It all seams hard to follow but the reasoning behind it is simple. New Zealand has a poor workplace safety record, people are hurt everyday at work. Businesses, government, managers and employees all need to take responsibility and REDUCE THE RISK.

Don’t forget about other authorities lurking in the background. Insurers have been known to find many reasons to not pay out on claims. If your factory burns down due to a faulty electrical appliance that hadn’t been tested? Would you want to test them?

PAT NZ believes in REASONABLE and PRACTICAL measures that are easy for all to follow, THAT MAKE WORKPLACES SAFER.

Outdoor Living

Change of season again. As the weather warms up us Kiwi’s like to spend as much time outdoors as we can. Let PAT NZ test all your leads and appliances before you take them out with you. Remember you should always use a portable RCD for added safety when using electrical appliances outside. Always check leads and appliances visually before plugging them in.
